Pandagon

Geekiest thing I'll probably post this week

But behind the scenes, at least some of the mighty Pandagon bloggers who bring you your daily read find it both amusing and heartening that so many people get completely obsessed with fonts they hate. There's a tragic beauty in it, when the friend of attractive fonts sees, for instance, another sign written in Papyrus or another email forward written in Comic Sans, and they rail impotently against the baseline aesthetic depravity of their fellow human beings.

Now ends the story of the biggest celebrity train wreck in modern history

News of Michael Jackson's passing threw me for a loop, though according to friends, it shouldn't have. He was a medical mess, a man who literally tried to put a wall of money between him and having a normal biological body. Of course his body gave out---god only knows how many drugs a plastic surgery addict and pedophile must take to escape the reality of himself. I think it shook me because I mentally chose to believe that the Michael Jackson that I loved died within minutes of releasing "Smooth Criminal". (I try to ignore the rest of the aptly titled Bad.)

The karmic punishment of Sandford's middle-aged passion

I really enjoyed these two blog posts at Broadsheet examining what might be the most shocking thing of all about this Mark Sanford scandal, which is that it actually fits the standard adultery narrative, where the cheater falls in love. And what's fascinating is how much people are embarrassed for him because of it, which doesn't make much sense to me, since I thought the emails that were published weren't anything unusual, though definitely private.* But as Amy Benfer notes, that Sanford is in love with a woman has been treated like it's somehow emasculating.

Governor Sanford's Disturbingly Adult E-Mails

As naughty erotic missives go, Mark Sanford's exchanges with "Maria" read like what your passionless 11th grade English teacher wrote in his half-completed novel. At some point, the lovers have an hours-long coffee where they talk about Thoreau while it rains outside.

A couple more books about love, marriage, feminism, and music to get you through the heat

I whipped through a couple of books this past week that I thought were really good reads, and easy reads to boot, which is nice when the thermostat is hitting 100 every day. (I promise I'll get used to the heat soon---but it takes a couple of weeks.) They touched on some of my favorite themes, so I thought I'd review/recommend them here.

I was wrong about Governor Sanford....

I thought the lover he was running off with would turn out to be male. Since the lover in question is female, I don't understand why it was so hard for Sanford to get some trusted aides to cover up for him during his trysts. The disappearing act doesn't really make sense, and so no wonder some people were wondering if he was having a different kind of break from real life.

Sally Kern on Obama's radical homo agenda (?!) and her Proclamation of Morality

Are they living in some alternate reality than the rest of us? Oklahoma State Rep. Sally Kern (sallykern@okhouse.gov) the homo-hating, illegal pistol-packing bigot caught The Peter's eye with this diatribe about this "proof" of the Obama admin's godless homosexualism:

White House response to letter from 77 members of Congress asking him to act on DADT

You'll recall that yesterday, 77 members of Congress sent a letter to President Obama calling for him to suspend DADT discharges by changing the policy's implementation at the Department of Defense (as opposed to executive order). The Advocate sought a response to this letter from the administration. It was, to be charitable, lacking.
