Parkland school security officer Scot Peterson wept Thursday as he was found not guilty of charges relating to his failure to run into the school as a shooter killed 14 students and three staffers.
He had been hit with seven counts of neglect of a child, three counts of culpable negligence and one count of perjury.
Peterson, who also worked as a Broward County sheriff's deputy, was the only person on campus that was armed.
"He was taken into custody in Broward County after a 15-month investigation that showed he 'refused to investigate the source of the gunshots, retreated during the active shooting while victims were being shot, and directed other law enforcement who arrived on scene to remain 500 feet away from the building,'" NBC News said, citing the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Peterson's defense was that he couldn't tell where the shooter was and where the shots were coming from.
Parkland families have been angry that Peterson didn't do more to protect the children.
He was facing a possible 100 years in prison.
Speaking to Today Show co-star Savannah Guthrie, Peterson swore that the day would haunt him for the rest of his life.
