Mike Pence caused his own undoing, a Vanity Fair correspondent said Saturday.
Pence, the former vice president who dropped his presidential campaign earlier in the day, served as Donald Trump's running mate in 2016. He stood by Trump for all four years.
He might have been too effective in that role, according to Molly Jong-Fast.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
Appearing on CNN Newsroom with Jim Acosta, Jong-Fast said "Mike Pence was actually sort of too good at his job."
"He was brought on to tell evangelicals that they could trust Trump, that Trump was one of their guys," she explained. "And evangelicals went along with it, and then they didn't need Pence."
Jong-Fast continued:
"Once they had decided that Trump was their guy, Pence almost made himself obsolete. And so I do think that that has sort of ... all of his purpose has been served."
