The identity of a pipe bomber who targeted the D.C. offices of the Republican and Democratic national committees the day before the Capitol attack remains one of the biggest mysteries of January 6, according to a report Friday.
The FBI is still frantically searching for the man, recently offering a half-million dollar reward for information and re-issuing a plea for help on the eve of the attack’s third anniversary.
“We urge everyone who may have previously hesitated to come forward or who may not have realized they had important information to contact us,” David Sundberg, assistant director in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office, said in a statement sent to the Associated Press Thursday.
It follows hundreds of hours of fruitless investigation to find the man.

The explosives were placed outside the two buildings between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on January 5, 2021, the FBI said. They weren’t discovered until after noon the next day.
Surveillance shows a person in a gray hooded sweatshirt, face mask and gloves in the area when the bombs are thought to have been planted.
