Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) on Tuesday acknowledged that he's not nearly as gung-ho about former President Donald Trump potentially returning to the White House as he once was.
In an interview on CNBC, Paul was asked about comments he made that his "enthusiasm" for Trump's 2024 campaign was "flagging."
Rather than walk back the comments, Paul decided to elaborate on them.
While first saying that he still vastly prefers Trump to Vice President Kamala Harris, he then laid out concerns that he has about the former president.
"I'm a deficit hawk," Paul said. "The Trump administration added $8 trillion, the Biden administration's going to add $8 trillion... As Trump was leaving office, he was agitating for $2,500 [COVID-19 relief] checks again passed out to everybody. I'm not for that, I was against the lockdowns, and I want to hear stronger language to that sense."

Paul then pushed for Trump to "get to the bottom" of the origins of COVID-19 by pushing unproven claims about the American government was funding research that supposedly led to the creation of the virus.
