McCain, Condi call for wars at the Republican Convention that even Republicans don't want

On Tuesday, Gov. Chris Christie told the Republican National Convention, "Real leaders don't follow polls. Real leaders change polls." On Wednesday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice made a valiant effort to do just that, by laying out the cases for military interventions in Iran and Syria while slamming the President for his Afghanistan withdrawal plans.

5 Questions For: Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson on marijuana policy

Former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson (R-NM) is now the Libertarian Party's presidential nominee, which is well-known for its support for marijuana policy reform -- and Johnson, like most politicians, admits to having smoked it himself. Raw Story asked him about the genesis of his positions, where he sees the country headed and what he thinks of his fellow political tokers' opposition to legalization.

5 Questions For: Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson on tax and entitlement reform

Former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson (R-NM) is now the Libertarian Party's presidential nominee, but much of what mainstream press coverage he's managed to get has focused on his positions on marijuana policy or his outsider status. With the nominees of his current party focusing extensively on tax and entitlement reforms, Raw Story asked him where he stood on those issues, and what makes his positions different.

5 Questions For: Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson on civil liberties -- including women's rights

Former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson (R-NM) is now the Libertarian Party's presidential nominee, but many of the Libertarian Party's constituency had their hearts first captured by one of Rep. Ron Paul's (R-TX) ultimately unsuccessful campaigns. With Paul throwing his weight behind the Romney-Ryan ticket, can his supporters and liberals disappointed in the president's record on civil rights find a new candidate-to-love in Johnson? And where does he stand on women's rights, as it becomes a top issue in the race?

5 Questions For: Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson on being screwed over by the GOP

Former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson (R-NM) threw his hat in the Republican ring during the primary season -- but, unlike candidates like Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MO), former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) and never-elected businessman Herman Cain, he got no support from his party, was excluded from the debates and found himself in the position of either quietly withdrawing or giving his own party's eventual candidate a run for his money. He chose the latter, and is now the Libertarian Party's presidential nominee. He talked to Raw Story about the primary, debate and presidential ballot process and how it's totally stacked against third party candidates.

Republican Convention Day 2: All you need is love (according to Ann Romney)

"Tonight, I want to talk to you about love," Ann Romney told the crowd at the beginning of her post-10 pm speech. It was going to be a tough sell for a crowd far more likely to get exercised by hate.

5 Questions For: Gay Republican and GOProud co-founder Chris Barron

Chris Barron is no stranger to controversy: From inviting the controversial Ann Coulter to headline the first-ever "HomoCon" of gay conservatives to his organizations on-again, off-again relationship with the influential CPAC conference to his infamous feud with liberal LGBT activist Dan Savage, he's never shied away from the spotlight and, in the process, helped make GOProud an influential organization in only a few short years. Although he's endorsed former governor Gary Johnson's (R-NM) bid for the presidency at the Libertarian nominee, he and the rest of the GOProud organization are hosting a party on August 28 for attendees at the Republican National Committee, and agreed to answer a few of Raw Story's questions.

Newt Gingrich at the RNC: The wealthy are more 'noble'

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) might not have the role he initially wanted at the Republican National Convention -- that of nominee -- but he's nonetheless using his time wisely. With the help of the RNC, he's launching Newt U, an apparently ongoing effort in partnership with the Washington Post Company's for-profit education arm, Kaplan. At the end of the second session of Newt U on August 28, 2012, he explained more about the thinking behind the his and Kaplan's efforts.

Republican Convention Day One: Everyone is fenced in (including David Koch)

Tropical storm warnings and grey skies still loomed over Tampa on Monday, and more than a few journalists braved the drive over the miles-long Howard Frankland Bridge from St. Petersburg in strong winds while the choppy waters of the bay slapped against the barriers and occasionally topped them. That ominous site soon faded when one reached downtown Tampa and saw several helicopters hovering between skyscrapers as though hung from the clouds.

5 Questions For: Three women at the Republican convention who support Todd Akin

It was barely a week ago that Rep. Todd Akin's comments about "legitimate rape" and a woman's supposed inability to conceive during one surfaced. Since then, he's been pressured by his party to drop out of his Senate race, called out by almost everyone in the conservative movement (including Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin and anti-abortion activist Rebecca Kiessling, whose whole activism is dedicated to convincing rape victims to keep any children conceived). But at the Republican National Committee's welcome party on Saturday night, Raw Story spotted a number of women delegates sporting flashing pro-life buttons and Todd Akin stickers. Three of them -- Zina Hackworth (of This Race Will Self-Destruct, an African-American anti-abortion and HIV awareness organization), Connie Eller (of Missouri Blacks for Life) and Debi Demien, agreed to speak to us.

Republican Convention Day Zero: Draped in the red, white and blue

The presence of Isaac wasn't the only thing dampening the moods of those who made it to Tampa on Sunday to attend or cover the Republican National Convention: the sheer size and visibility of the police and military presence was enough to give even some conservatives pause. Though patches identified which of the surrounding counties the individual officers normally serve, the fact that the police officers' khaki outfits and the military's standard camouflage matched had the effect of making the large and very visibly-armed force of men and women seem more like one cohesive force than several individual ones. The contrast of some officers' black leg holsters made them seem somehow even more ominous and intimidating, especially when officers stood guard at seemingly random spots blocks from the convention zone. The officers at times seemed to outnumber the March on the RNC protesters with their vagina costumes, hand-made signs, snare drums and vuvuzelas, trying to make their voices heard at a convention that decidedly isn't interested.

GOProud calls GOP platform 'meaningless' and civil union fight 'distraction'

The Republican Party's platform committee has struck down a proposal to include language expressing support for same sex civil unions as an alternative for LGBT Republicans who want to formalize their unions without treading on the politically and religiously sensitive ground of "marriage." When reached by Raw Story for comment, GOProud activist Jimmy Salvia was angry and disappointed over the civil union fight, but probably not for the reason that one would suspect.
