'Like the Titanic': Republican hints Trump's big budget bill is sinking

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) indicated that President Donald Trump's hope for "one big, beautiful bill" might be sinking.

Semafor congressional bureau chief Burgess Everett posted on X Tuesday that Johnson thinks that the Republicans should reconsider doing more than one bill.

The massive piece of legislation is called a reconciliation bill, an effort to pass a budget without a filibuster blocking it in the Senate. However, the bill goes beyond the budget. It adds in an immigration package and extends Trump's 2017 tax cuts, as the Washington Post explained on Tuesday.

"In the coming weeks and months, we will pass the largest tax cuts in American History—and that will include No Tax on Tips, NO Tax on Social Security, and No Tax on Overtime. It's called the one big beautiful bill..." Trump told a crowd in April.

Johnson seemed uncertain if the bill would pass, and argued that it's time to turn the ship around, even if it's already sailed.

"From my standpoint — if there's one goal to this budget reconciliation process, it ought to be to reduce long-term deficits," Johnson told reporters. "As it's currently being discussed, I don't see any scenario in which we're not actually increasing long-term deficits."

A reporter asked him whether he thinks it's too late to go back to work on the bill.

"No, I think — no, not at all. I mean, I keep being told, well, that ship's already sailed, my response is, well call back to port. I mean, the other ship might be like the Titanic and maybe going down, but..." Johnson said, trailing off.
