Gavin Newsom mocks GOP: 'How sad is the Republican Party when Taylor Swift is a threat?'

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) ridiculed the Republican Party in a recent interview with Jonathan Capehart over the Taylor Swift conspiracy theories.

GOP hosts and commentators claimed in the past several weeks that pop star Taylor Swift is part of a "deep state" government operation from President Joe Biden to win the 2024 election.

It led to mockery that seeped outside of politics and into pop culture. Even the conservative Wall Street Journal weighed in on the absurdity. Trump then added his two cents by claiming that he is "more popular" than Swift.

"In response to my culture [war] answer," Capehart said to Newsom, "you gave me the, we have this and they have that. We have this and they have that. One thing you didn't mention was, we have Taylor Swift and they have lost their minds."

The two men laughed.

"We are, as they say over here, living in interesting times," Newsom said. "That said, the Republicans that are looking down and passing Taylor Swift do so at their own peril. What is her sin? What is her sin? She wants more people to vote. She wants more people to register to vote and remind them of the importance of expressing their democratic rights and responsibilities. Wow. And that says everything you need to know about the Republican Party."

He said that the GOP doesn't want the broad American public to vote because the more people who vote the more Republicans lose.

"How sad and pathetic that the Republican Party has become that Taylor Swift, literally, is a threat to them for one reason. She wants folks to turn out and vote," Newsom closed.
