Famously liberal director Rob Reiner said on MSNBC Monday that it was a no-brainer that he wanted Republicans to succeed.
But not because he agrees with them on policy, the "When Harry Met Sally" director was keen to note — indeed he has proclaimed 2024 a critical time to stop "fascist" Donald Trump from seizing absolute power.
Rather, it's because of Reiner's belief in a healthy two-party system that functions constructively.
Reiner explained his views when anchor Ari Melber probed Reiner on his political views.
"You might not want the Republicans to be super effective in Congress, based on what I know about some of your beliefs," said anchor Ari Melber. "But we all might do better in a government where there is some baseline efficacy. It seems like Republicans have completely lost that as well. I'm just curious, especially given how much work you've been doing studying the right, what do you think about not a right-wing Congress, but a Congress that talks right-wing but doesn't actually do much of anything these days."
"No, they're not right-wing, they're not left-wing," agreed Reiner. "They're not anything except Donald Trump."
"And it's wrong to say that I don't want them to succeed. Of course I want them to succeed," he added. "We have a divided government now. We control — the Democrats control the Senate, and the White House, and the Republicans control the House. But we have problems that are solvable, or at least the beginnings of solvable, like the border, like worrying about what Putin is doing in Ukraine. He just assassinated his number one opponent, Navalny, and we're not doing anything. And the reason we're not doing anything it's because they're at the behest of Donald Trump, who essentially wants to lay the blame for everything that's going on right now at the feet of Joe Biden."
"So it'll give Donald Trump an advantage, or he thinks it'll give him an advantage, for the election," said Reiner. "But meanwhile, people are hurting. And people are struggling. And it's disgraceful, what's happening in the House of Representatives right now."
