Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis this week gave a rambling and evasive response when CNN's Jake Tapper asked him if former President Donald Trump should face charges if there is compelling evidence that he committed crimes.
Instead of addressing the issue directly, DeSantis accused Democrats of "criminalizing political differences" and of weaponizing the Department of Justice, ranted about special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into the 2016 Trump campaign's contacts with Russian agents, and finished off by saying it was time to look forward and not back to what happened in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election.
Former Republican Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan appeared on CNN Thursday to analyze DeSantis's response, and he didn't hold back when criticizing the Florida governor.
"With all due respect, that is the worst answer I have heard to that question," he said.

Duncan then outlined what a competent response to Tapper's question would be.
"I don't care about Donald Trump's legal future -- that's his problem, he had his chance and screwed up and lost to Joe Biden," he said, summarizing how he'd respond if he were DeSantis. "If I'm Ron DeSantis, I champion the fact I'm a conservative governor, got a strong robust economy in Florida. I got COVID right. I talk about the things that I can do for the country. I talk about immigration reform. I talk about opportunities to support Ukraine. I talk about education and school choice and the things that helped him win, take Florida from purple to bright red."
But the actual response DeSantis delivered, argued Duncan, was simply "a bad answer."
