Florida's first-of-its kind election police will report directly to Ron DeSantis

The Florida legislature on Wednesday approved the creation of a standalone election police force, rubber-stamping a similar proposal floated two months ago by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has pushed for the idea under the guise of "election integrity."

DeSantis had originally called for a budget of $6 million and a staff of 52 workers to establish a law enforcement body for the state's election administration, according to The Washington Post. Ultimately, Florida lawmakers allotted $2 million to the unit, calling it the Office of Election Crimes and Security.

Miami newspaper’s blistering editorial: 'Republicans have a white nationalist problem'

Miami-based Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio has been indicted on federal conspiracy charges for allegedly playing a leadership role in the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol Building. Discussing this indictment in an editorial published on March 8, the Miami Herald’s editorial board cites Tarrio as part of a disturbing trend of far-right extremism in the Sunshine State.

“Miami’s own homegrown extremist, former Proud Boys National Chairman Henry ‘Enrique’ Tarrio, has been indicted on grounds he directed his group during the January 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol — another indication of the Republican Party’s terrifying tolerance of White supremacy and extremism,” the Herald’s editorial board explains. “And Florida is once again at center stage.”

Trumpism continues to thrive despite Trump himself suffering 'effectual exile': columnist

Donald Trump persists in projecting the image of a guy who's going to run for president (again). He basically makes that declaration at his "rallies" around the country, in online statements and fundraising emails. While Trumpism thrives in today's GOP in the personification of the likes of Marjorie Taylor Greene, Ron DeSantis and others, some are questioning how viable a candidate Trump would be in the 2024 election.

One of those is Guardian opinion columnist Rebecca Solnit. She writes: "One of the assumptions is that Trump will still be alive and competent to run, but the health of this sedentary shouter in his mid-70s, including the after-effects of the Covid-19 he was hospitalised for in 2020, could change." Solnit also lays out a long list of factors that would make for serious headwinds if Trump decides to run again.

On Sunday, a day before the Florida Senate was scheduled to consider a nationally-watched piece of legislation referred to as “Don’t Say Gay,” the organization Equality Florida posted a statement condemning “homophobic, transphobic” remarks from Gov. Ron DeSantis’ press secretary.

Christina Pushaw tweeted Friday in support of the bill that would restrict certain conversations on LGBTQ issues in Florida’s public school classrooms. That led to a scathing statement from Equality Florida:

‘Unbridled hatred’: DeSantis SPOX blasted for saying ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill opponents ‘probably’ are ‘groomers’ of kids

Many across the nation were shocked and outraged after Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis's press secretary, Christina Pushaw, entered the battle over the "Don't Say Gay" bill, saying anyone who opposes the legislation is "probably" grooming children for sex. Many immediately took that to mean she is calling them, especially LGBTQ people, pedophiles.

The far-right, often the religious right, for decades have falsely accused LGBTQ people of being pedophiles. Studies prove LGBTQ people are no more likely to engage in pedophilia than their heterosexual counterparts.

Trump cozying up to disgraced former Missouri governor in Senate race because he's anti-McConnell: report

It increasingly appears that the struggle for control of whatever the Republican party is these days is becoming a throw-down between former president Donald Trump and current Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). The latest sign: Trump appears to be sidling up to Eric Greitens in his race to secure the GOP nomination in the Missouri Senate primary.

Politico reports that at last week's Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Trump seduced Greitens with tickets to a private reception, but with the caveat that the disgraced former Missouri governor had to tweet out his opposition to McConnell continuing as majority leader. Greitens, who has done a full Ron DeSantis in mimicking Trump, was only too happy to comply.

Thousands of students across Florida on Thursday walked out of classes to protest Republicans' "Don't Say Gay" bill, hoping to quash the fast-tracked and likely unconstitutional legislation that is supported by GOP Governor Ron DeSantis.

RNC swears it will stay independent if Trump runs in 2024 — but they're still paying his legal fees

Former President Donald Trump won't say whether or not he'll run for president in 2024 because he said it would trigger campaign finance rules that would require he stop raising money into his super PAC. But the Republican Party has made it clear that they'll remain independent if he does announce.

BuzzFeed reported Thursday that the far-right party swears, “We will remain neutral." That may not the case for the state, county and other Republican Party officials, however.
