'Almost certainly' a crime: CNN analyst predicts 'hot water' for Ronna McDaniel

Former federal prosecutor Harry Litman told CNN on Friday that he thinks Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel put herself in real legal jeopardy when she offered to provide legal help to two Michigan canvassers if they refused to certify the results of the 2020 election.

A newly unearthed audio recording shows that both McDaniel and Trump called the two canvassers and pressured them against certifying the results, while promising to set them up with lawyers in exchange.

According to Litman, McDaniel's actions are "almost certainly" a state crime.

"Michigan law prohibits bribery, getting a public official to try not to do their duty by offering something of value," he explained. "Here that would be a lawyer because they knew, everyone knew, it would be needed. So this is hot water all around."

Litman also shot down claims from Trump allies that the former president was simply executing his presidential duties when he placed pressure on local election officials to not do their duties when it came to certifying the results.

"That's not going to fly because he's not acting as president here, he's acting as a candidate," Litman said. "Ronna McDaniel is just saying, 'Oh, we were just looking into things,' but that's not going to fly either because she's exhorting them not to do their job."
