MSNBC host Katy Tur mocked President Donald Trump on Monday as he backed off peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.
Speaking in the White House garden for an event about artificial intelligence, Trump told the gathering a little about his conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Everybody, we just spent two and a half hours talking to Vladimir Putin, and I think some progress has been made. It's a terrible situation going on over there," said Trump. "Five thousand young people every single week are being killed. So hopefully we did something. We also spoke to the heads of most of the European nations, and we're trying to get that whole thing wrapped up. What a shame that it ever started in the first place. So...."
Tur said that in a Truth Social post that included the readout of the call, Trump claimed that the negotiations would "be between Ukraine and Russia and that the Vatican may get involved and host negotiations."

"The conditions for that will be negotiated between the two parties, as it can only be," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The Trump administration has been conducting peace talks with Russian officials and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky since it came into office.
"From first glance, it appears like the president may be backing off any involvement in the negotiations," Tur continued. "A man, by the way, who said that he was going to end the war single-handedly on day one of his administration."
