A reporter flagged what he says is a "very strange" false claim about Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) made by a Republican senator on the Senate floor on Saturday.

Jake Sherman, founder of Punchbowl News, over the weekend took to social media to highlight the purported falsehood. The fact check comes amid a flurry of activity on the Senate floor over the weekend, as lawmakers on both sides of the aisle give speeches largely about the shutdown and healthcare.

Sherman specifically noted a comment made by U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH), who was recently accused by Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) of tracking the VINs of the vehicles for her Democratic campaign.

"Bernie Moreno said something very strange on the Senate floor today," according to Sherman. "He said that financial disclosures show that Chuck Schumer has a higher net worth than he does."

"That is not true," Sherman added. "Schumer's net worth is shy of $2M. Moreno is worth many, many millions."

Asked by a fellow reporter, "Does he have huge mortgages or other debts though?" Sherman replied, "Still not even close...."
