The Freedom Caucus is hellbent on a government shutdown simply for the sake of it at this point, argued former Trump campaign senior adviser David Urban on Thursday's edition of CNN's "The Lead."
This comes as Republicans try to advance an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden, with no clear offense they're even charging him with, all the while at an impasse over getting appropriation bills passed and at each others' throats behind closed doors.
"David, House Oversight Committee, their responsibility is to investigate things of import to the American people," said anchor Jake Tapper. "I mean, there's a lot of import to the American people. I personally wish there were more investigations, whether it's Democrats or Republicans in charge of Congress, with the pharmaceutical industry, what they've done in terms of the opioid epidemic, which seems to me of much more importance and what's going on with fentanyl in this country. Tens of thousands of Americans dying from this."

"But be that as it may, there's about to be a government shutdown because House Republicans can't even agree on a bill that won't pass even the Senate," Tapper continued. "So what do you think of the timing of this?""
"Well it sucks," said Urban to chuckles around the panel. "Look, it's sad that we're at this point. Right? Because, look, I don't agree with Congressman [Matt] Gaetz on many things. Right? The congressman has basic responsibilities. Pass the budget. Pass 13 appropriations bills. Stay, do your work. Basic stuff. What the American people expect. You hire somebody, hire an electrician to fix your broken light, they fix your light. Hire a congressman, expect them to go to D.C. and legislate. This should be getting done whether Democrats or Republicans are in charge. Going away for the weekend, not grinding the grind from day one, you know, everything should be focused at this point trying to get a solution."
"I think unfortunately, the Speaker's in a spot where got a small handful of people who are just intransigent," Urban continued. "And no matter what he does or says, or gives them, they're just going to hold their breath until they turn blue, and shut the government down. They want to be able to go back to districts and beat their chests."
