A Democratic senator smacked down a senior West Wing employee and adviser to President Donald Trump on Tuesday night over his claim that nearly every staffer with the USAID donated to left-wing candidates or causes.
Earlier in the day, Trump aide Stephen Miller told CNN anchor Jake Tapper that there are 2 million federal employees in the federal government — and that "overwhelmingly, the career federal service in this country is far left, left-wing."
"I don't know that to be a fact," Tapper responded.
"Well I'll give you an example," Miller retorted. "We looked at USAID as an example. Ninety-eight percent of the workforce donated to either Kamala Harris or another left-wing candidate."
USAID, which stands for U.S. Agency for International Development, is the principal federal agency responsible for administering international development and humanitarian assistance around the globe, including disaster and poverty relief.

When asked by CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins his thoughts on the Trump administration looking into the political affiliations of career government employees, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) immediately swatted away Miller's assertion.
"First of all, that's not true. Ninety-eight percent of USAID employees did not donate to Kamala Harris. They are making up facts," he said.
Murphy said the Trump administration has made "no bones about it" — "They want a purge from government."
"The only qualification to Donald Trump for you to serve in government is if you pledge a loyalty oath to him personally and are willing to facilitate his corruption. He's trying to turn the government into an enrichment vehicle for his billionaire friends. He wants to steal from ordinary people in order to help his Mar-a-Lago crowd. If you aren't interested in that agenda, then you can't work for the president of the United States," he said.
Murphy defended the workers of USAID, noting they aren't partisan or political — they try to install systems around the world that protect U.S. interests.
