30 congressional leaders caught in Scotland — using taxpayer money amid shutdown

TMZ caught 30 members of Congress touring Scotland courtesy of taxpayer funding amid the ongoing partial government shutdown.

The large group was captured on camera at Edinburgh Castle, a major tourist location, all while government workers have gone unpaid, according to a report on Wednesday. The image featured Rep. John McGuire (R-VA), Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI), Rep. David Rouzer (R-NC), Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY), and Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO) all taking a guided tour at the historic location.

"Congress is not supposed to take taxpayer-funded trips like this during a government shutdown — or so we thought — but it sounds like they're getting around it because this is a partial shutdown. The way we see it, a shutdown is a shutdown," TMZ reported. ...

Scotland loses Harry Potter attraction as iconic steam train halted

Scotland's so-called "Harry Potter Train" has halted its service until further notice amid a dispute over safety regulations, depriving visiting fans of the books and films of a major spot for selfies. The steam train is seen snaking its way across the Glenfinnan Viaduct in two Harry Potter movies as the Hogwarts Express between Mallaig on the Scottish west coast and Fort William at the foot of the highest British mountain, Ben Nevis. The operator West Coast Railways (WCR) said that the train would not operate until a decision is made as to whether the historic steam train can continue to run ......

Scottish National Party wins election but lacks absolute majority

The Scottish National Party (SNP) has won regional parliamentary elections in Scotland by a clear margin, but narrowly missed an absolute majority. Nicola Sturgeon's party won 64 seats in parliament, the Electoral Commission in Edinburgh announced on Saturday evening. The absolute majority is 65 seats. However, as the Greens, who are also calling for independence, won eight seats, backers of independence have a clear majority....

New independence vote looms as Scottish nationalists ahead in count

The Scottish National Party (SNP), which favours Scottish independence, looked likely to come out strongest in elections in the regional parliament on Saturday morning, making the prospect of a second referendum on breaking away more likely. Nicola Sturgeon, leader of the SNP, has said that she would push ahead with a second referendum on Scottish independence from the rest of the United Kingdom if her party wins a majority in parliament and "when the time is right." However, even if the SNP doesn't win the 65 seats needed for an outright victory, there's a high likelihood that a pro-independe......

Bye, bye, London: The young Scots who want independence from Britain

Michael Gray wants out. As soon as possible. The 29-year-old lawyer-to-be is fighting for Scottish independence and believes Brexit has shown that it's time for another vote on leaving Britain. He's certain: "Scottish results didn't really play a role" in the 2016 Brexit referendum, as a clear majority of 62 per cent of Scots voted against leaving the European Union. Many Scots, including Gray, therefore want another vote on whether Scotland should leave Britain. The governing Scottish National Party (SNP) has already promised a second vote on independence if the party wins a majority in upcom......

Scotland's leader to face vote of no confidence

Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon is facing a vote of no confidence later on Tuesday, after criticism surfaced surrounding how her government handled an investigation into her predecessor. Sturgeon, First Minister for Scotland and leader of the country's Scottish National Party, was accused of misleading the Scottish parliament during an investigation into her predecessor, Alex Salmond. Salmond was accused of sexual harassment in 2018, which led to the Scottish government launching an investigation. The politician, who denied the claims, was concerned about how the case was handled and subsequen......
