A Tennessee Republican is accusing Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) of mocking him for praying -- and he says he's got the receipts to back it up.
During an appearance on CNN Wednesday morning, Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) was shown a video clip of McCarthy in which he denied ever mocking Burchett for praying over his vote on whether to oust McCarthy as House Speaker.
Host Phil Mattingly then asked Burchett if, after hearing McCarthy's explanation, he would have changed his vote to oppose the measure to vacate the chair.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
"Probably not," Burchett replied. "Heck, I have a recording of what was said."
This seemed to take Mattingly aback.
"You recorded it?" he asked.
"But it was between us," Burchett replied. "But the conversation went on in a belittling tone."
Later in the conversation, Mattingly asked Burchett if he regularly made recordings of his conversations with McCarthy.
"It was one of those random things because I was in a meeting with other people and I just said, 'Let's record it,'" he said. "And so I've got it just in case I needed it. Because a lot of times, when you're talking to somebody, you have trouble remembering exactly what you said, especially when you're under a lot of pressure."
Burchett went on to say, however, that he was unlikely to release the recording.
