Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) nominated Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) for the speakership on Wednesday by praising Jordan's willingness to cut the two most popular programs offered by the American government.
During his speech on the House floor, Cole said that Jordan would be "unlike any other speaker we've had" due to his "courage to talk about a long-term plan and to get at the real drivers of debt," which he named as Medicare and Social Security.
"No president of either side has been willing to deal with this," said Cole. "No speaker of either side has been willing to deal with this."

Cole then drew applause from his fellow Republicans for arguing that Jordan's willingness to "get to the root of our spending problem" with cuts to popular programs "takes courage."
While Jordan's stances may or may not be courageous, they are also wildly unpopular, as polls have consistently shown that most Americans are strongly opposed to cuts in either program.
What's more such cuts would very likely be unpopular even among core Republican voters who are older and rely on Social Security and Medicare to survive.
Jordan went on to lose the second ballot.
