CNN host Omar Jimenez chided some glaring contradictions in President Donald Trump's deportation policies during the opening segment of "Laura Coates Live" on Thursday.
Jimenez's comments happened just hours after a U.S. District Court judge in New Hampshire handed the Trump administration a setback in its efforts to deport immigrants. Judge Joseph Laplante issued a preliminary injunction Thursday blocking the implementation of Trump's executive order from February regarding birthright citizenship.
Laplante said the order applies to a protected class of newborns born on or after February 20, 2025, and to children whose parents are in the country either legally or illegally.
Jimenez pointed out that the order put Trump in a "familiar position," where he is attempting to please his base on one hand while facing the "economic realities" of his decisions on the other.
The people who appear to be most impacted by Trump's decisions are American farmers, Jimenez said. He showed clips of an immigration raid at a cannabis farm in California.
"Scenes like this symbolize what farmers across the region fear: an immigration crackdown that could ensnare their workers, hurt their businesses, or even destabilize the nation's food supply," Jimenez said.
Trump campaigned on promises to bring down the cost of living for American consumers and to end illegal immigration into the U.S. However, Jimenez said it appears the president is confronting the reality that making progress on one goal will hurt his progress on others.
That progress has become even more difficult to find as the Trump administration appears to be unable to stay on message, Jimenez said.
