A prominent prosecutor in the Justice Department who investigated both Jeffrey Epstein and Sean "Diddy" Combs for sex trafficking was fired on Wednesday, Politico reported.

The reason why Maurene Comey was fired was not immediately clear, but it comes as President Donald Trump seeks to distance himself from the Epstein files scandal that has rocked his administration for the last week. Both Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi have faced bipartisan criticism for their handling of the case.

Trump has promised his MAGA base for years that he would release the files once he was in office. Bondi even claimed that the files were sitting on her desk, suggesting that they were ready to be released. However, the administration has since backtracked in an attempt to make the story go away.

The internet had strong words for Trump after learning of Comey's firing.

"MAGA - the cover-up is real and it’s deep," wrote Brad Woodhouse, the former senior advisor to the Democratic National Committee, in a post on X.

"Totally not guilty-looking," former MSNBC host and Zeteo founder Medhi Hasan wrote in a post on X.

"That'll kill the conspiracy theories," wrote journalist Marcy Wheeler on Bluesky.

"This isn’t subtle. It’s not even slick. It’s pure autocratic revenge politics—where truth-tellers get purged and the guilty get promoted," reads another post on Bluesky.

"This decision will haunt Trump and Bondi," reads another post on X.

"Definitely raises no questions about Epstein. SURE," Another Bluesky user posted.

"I guess it’s not a conspiracy if they are just going to be open about it," reads another post on Bluesky.
