President Donald Trump's promises to be transparent about the Jeffrey Epstein files "could come back to haunt" Republicans as they meet with their constituents, according to one analyst.

Ashley Pratte Oates, senior vice president at The Herald Group, joined MSNBC's Alex Witt on "Alex Witt Reports" on Sunday to discuss the impact of Trump's promises to release the Epstein files on GOP lawmakers. During the campaign trail, Trump promised to release the files, but his administration has backtracked since it took office.

Witt asked Oates how Trump's promises to release the files could impact GOP lawmakers at local town halls, some of which have become "raucous."

"It's probably not going to look very good," Oates warned.

"The interesting part here, too, that we should all remember is that on the campaign trail, Trump was the one who said the government had hidden the Epstein investigation from the public and said he was going to bring about transparency," she added. "But it was his government, and Republicans, that are hiding."

"And that's a huge problem that...could come back to haunt them at town halls because they can play those clips over and over again of Trump saying there was no transparency around this and that he would bring it back," Oates continued.
