President Donald Trump's latest moves put Republicans in "jeopardy" ahead of the 2026 midterm election, one GOP analyst revealed on Sunday.
Former Rep. Carlos Curbelo, a Republican who represented Florida from 2015 to 2019, said on Sunday that Trump's efforts to prosecute his political opponents could cause Republicans to lose voters from the "political middle." That could significantly hinder the party's efforts to retain control of the House and Senate following the election.
Curbelo discussed the potential impact of Trump's moves to prosecute his opponents on MSNBC's "Alex Witt Reports."
"These are all pretty weak cases, and we'll see how they play out in the courts, but here's what I think is really a shame: President Trump campaigned last year, telling the American people that the justice system, not just at the federal level, but in certain states, had been weaponized against him," Curbelo said. "A lot of people trusted him, believed him, and sympathized with those arguments."
Over the last couple of weeks, Trump allies have indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey. James was indicted for alleged mortgage fraud, while Comey is facing charges of lying to Congress and obstruction of justice. Both James and Comey have denied the allegations against them.
"With that perspective, for the administration now to turn around and do something that really seems similar to what the president was describing, really puts him in jeopardy of losing that political middle," he continued. "And I think this could hurt congressional republicans in the midterms next year."
"Two wrongs don't make a right," he added. "I know we learned that when we're very young, but apparently our politicians still haven't learned it. So I don't think that this ends well for our democracy. And I don't think it ends well for republicans politically."
