CNN’s Harry Enten was left stunned Friday after new polling showed President Donald Trump suffering “probably the worst 10-day period in the polls his entire second term.”
“The numbers are just atrocious!” Enten exclaimed.
According to a new poll from the Associated Press, Trump was below water among voters by as much as minus 26 points. The president’s best performing poll – from Marquette Law School – still had the president underwater by 14 points.
“When your best poll has you still 14 points underwater, you know it's truly bad and it's as bad as 26 points underwater!” Enten said. “We're talking about an average well, well underwater with the deep blue sea swimming with the fishes!”
As to what was driving Trump’s historic polling drop, Enten pointed to the president’s “atrocious” favorability among independent voters, which dropped by a staggering 39 points since Trump took office, from minus 4 points in January to minus 43 points in November.
“Oh my God… when you're 43 points underwater with independents, you know you're doing terribly!” Enten said. “You can't win with this! If this holds for next year's midterm election, wave adios amigos, goodbye, see you later to that House Republican majority. And that Senate Republican majority? Very much in danger as well!”
As far as issues, Enten pointed to anger among voters over inflation as the key driver of Trump’s plummeting favorability.
Trump was above water on the issue of inflation back in January, polling plus 3 points. By November, however, that number plummeted to minus 34 points.
“They despise him at this point!” Enten said.
Reducing costs was among Trump’s major campaign pledges in the leadup to the 2024 election. Despite pledging to end inflation “on day one,” and to “bring down the prices of all goods,” costs have, in fact, only risen since Trump took office.
