Observers were left stunned on Monday after President Trump made a baffling claim about drug prices during a press conference at Mar-a-Lago.
Trump took questions from reporters after announcing the U.S. Navy is creating a new class of ships called the Trump Class. During the session, he claimed that his administration has decreased the prices for certain drugs by "1,200% and in some cases by 1,300 or 1,400%," a claim that many on social media pointed out had no possibility of being true.
"A drug that sells for $10 in London is costing $130 in New York," Trump said. "We are bringing it down to $20 ... You can do your own math. But it’s 2000%, 3000%. That's pretty amazing."
Political analysts and observers were quick to point out how ridiculous Trump's claim was.
"Either drug companies are gonna give us all their money or he doesn’t know basic math," writer Hemant Mehta posted on X.
"I give up," Jessica Riendl, fellow at The Brookings Institute, posted on X. "As an economist and a voter, I just give up."
"Hello, friendly neighborhood professor here," Adam Cochran, an independent journalist, posted on X. "That is an -84.61% discount. It is not 2000%-3000%. Hope this helps!"
"'You can do your own math' captures the post-modern turn on the MAGA right perfectly," Jonah Goldberg, editor of The Dispatch, posted on X.
