'Trump is on a tear': Onlookers say president is 'fritzing out' as he re-shares old praise

President Donald Trump appeared to be reminiscing on Monday evening over his State of the Union address he delivered back in February, with onlookers baffled to see the president sharing several screenshots on social media of conservative commentators’ praise of his performance.

As Trump’s favorability dips to historic lows amid his wildly unpopular war against Iran – a conflict that has sent gas prices surging and disrupted global trade – the president took to his social media platform Truth Social to share three screenshots of conservative commentators lavishing him with praise for his State of the Union address he delivered more than two months ago.

Critics, such as conservative political writer and commentator Eddie Scarry, suggested Trump to be “remembering the good old days” through revisiting a moment in time before his favorability plummeted. Others, like X user “BublyHamm,” a frequent critic of the Trump administration, described Trump’s behavior as a “narcissistic coping mechanism.”

“Whenever narcissists back themselves into a corner in which they can't escape being faced with their own failures/incompetence, they cope with the discomfort by obsessively focusing on better times during which they received praise,” they wrote in a social media post on X.

Sam Stein, managing editor of The Bulwark and MS NOW contributor, was taken aback by the president’s focus on an event that occurred 70 days ago as of Tuesday.

“Trump is on a tear right now on Truth Social posting screenshot-ed praise of his FEBRUARY 24 State of the Union address,” Stein wrote.

And Jim Stewartson, a political commentator and writer, suggested Trump’s posting spree to be evidence that the president knew he was in a politically dire situation.

“Seriously, why is Trump having a flashback to the State of the Union?” Stewartson wrote. “He’s totally fritzing out. This isn’t half of it.”
