Former U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) flattened Donald Trump's recent attempt to deploy his "I know you are, but what am I" strategy.
Speaking at a recent rally, Trump claimed that President Joe Biden is the "destroyer of democracy." The idea of preserving democracy is an issue that has been at the heart of arguments against Trump from both parties that oppose another Trump term. Voters who supported Democratic candidates during the 2022 midterm election also indicated in surveys that they were concerned about the stability of democracy.
Franken and CNN host Jim Acosta pointed out that the issue must be a make-or-break among some Republicans because Trump is now adopting it as part of his campaign. Acosta wondered if the attempt would work and fool American voters.

"I don't know. Things that we -- we have two sets of information in our country," said Franken. "You remember when Kellyanne Conway said we have 'alternative facts.' Trump said there's fake news. What they're basically saying is it's all up for grabs. There's no truth anymore."
As Franken explained, Trump's decision to talk about democracy comes after he inspired a crowd to storm the U.S. Capitol.
"He is the guy who won't respect — he still says that he won the election when we all know he didn't in 2020," he continued. "This is a guy who has said that he will put people in the Justice Department who will go after the people who went after him. He is a classic autocrat. This is one of the things where he is saying the opposite of what's true. But his people will believe him."
He went on to say that he's worried about the possibility of Trump getting back into the White House. If he does, Franken said he thinks Trump will eliminate many of the professional government workers, whom he calls the "deep state." Instead, he'll replace them with MAGA loyalists.
"He said — he is talking about UGS — using the military domestically. I'm extremely worried that if he wins, our democracy will, in, very strong terms, will cease to exist. That's a pretty scary thing to say, but that's what I'm afraid of, certainly," said Franken.
