CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin on Wednesday leveled former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party for their continued attempts to normalize the January 6th Capitol riots.

While discussing the ongoing work of the House select committee investigating the Capitol riots, Toobin explained why the work they're doing is so important even though former Trump officials are refusing to comply with the committee's subpoenas.

"Yesterday we talked about former Vice President Pence saying, 'Well, you know, this wasn't such a big deal," he said. "The entire Republican Party is falling into line with this really obscene idea that this was some sort of legitimate political protest on January 6th, instead of the criminal insurrection that it really was."

He then referenced a newly released Trump statement that attacked the select committee and claimed that the election won by President Joe Biden last year was the "real insurrection."

"What the former president said is precisely that, it was merely a protest about the election, that was not as bad as the election itself, which is really an obscene rewriting of history," he said.
