President Donald Trump took issue Tuesday with a new MAGA-approved CBS Evening News anchor, resorting at one point during a lengthy interview to coaching up the journalist on how to do his job.
In a sometimes tense interview, Trump railed against Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and tried to school new anchor Tony Dokoupil on proper journalism.
Dokoupil pressed Trump on criticism over his criminal probe into Powell, noting that even some prominent conservatives say it appears like "political retribution."
Trump fired back with unsolicited media advice.
"And some prominent conservatives also love it, so, you know, you gotta mention them too--" he began, as the CBS host insisted he respond to the accusation.
"As you grow older in this position, you have to mention the other side. More people like it than not," Trump lectured the anchor.
Later, when Dokoupil tried to pin Trump down on the political retribution question, Trump pivoted entirely, boasting about the economy, factory relocations, and deregulation.
"I can't help what it looks like. Look, I've created the greatest economy maybe in history, and you're seeing that now," he said.
The Trump interview comes as Dokoupil's takeover of the storied show hasn't translated into ratings gold. In the anchor's first week, viewership plummeted 23% compared to a year ago.
