Former President Donald Trump has repeatedly attacked law enforcement officials tied to his court cases, arguing their motives are illegitimate and politically motivated, as he did the Colorado Supreme Court judges who ruled to boot him from the state ballot.
On Tuesday, MSNBC analyst Ja'han Jones wrote that there was one word to describe Trump's recent claim of a left-wing election-interference plot: "Nonsense."
"GOPers would have you believe that the many attempts to hold Trump civilly or criminally liable for his actions have all been part of some Democrat-led scheme, when in reality, many of the cases rely on Republicans’ testimony — often from onetime members of Trump’s inner circle — and/or were even initiated by a Republican," wrote Jones.
"Let’s take the Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling, for example. Republicans are harping on the fact that all of the court’s justices were appointed by Democrats, claiming that this shows partisanship — never mind that their party has tried to pack state and federal courts with Republicans for years."
One of the big problems with calling this a politically motivated attack, wrote Jones, is that "the case was brought by six Republican and unaffiliated voters in Colorado (and that three of the Democrat-appointed state justices voted in Trump’s favor)."
Jones notes that another ballot challenge filed in Arizona came from a long-shot Republican presidential candidate.
"Meanwhile, the former president’s two election-related criminal cases — which also have led to accusations of partisanship — rely heavily on Republicans," Jones writes.
Ultimately, he continued, Republicans have been key figures in the efforts to investigate and give evidence against the former president — as evidenced by figures such as former Reps. Liz Cheney (R-WY), Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), and Denver Riggleman (R-VA) working for the House January 6 Select Committee, and some of the biggest bombshell allegations coming from former Trump White House staffer Cassidy Hutchinson.
"Simply put, the GOP’s claims that Trump is being subjected to political targeting ignore the fact that Republicans have played an essential role in — if not led — many of the efforts to hold him accountable," wrote Jones.
