Former President Donald Trump will face a jury in Washington, D.C. if — as looks increasingly likely — he is indicted in the federal investigation into the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Facing a jury in D.C., an area that overwhelmingly backed President Joe Biden, has long been a frustration of the January 6 defendants themselves, many of whom unsuccessfully tried to get their trial moved to their home states.
But the former president shouldn't obsess over that, said conservative lawyer George Conway on CNN — that's the least of his problems.
"Republicans, many of them, including Trump's — many of Trump's 2024 rivals, including Ron DeSantis, they argue Trump couldn't get a fair trial here in Washington, D.C.," said anchor Wolf Blitzer. "What do you think?"
"I think he can get a perfectly fair trial anywhere," said Conway, a frequent critic of Trump. "I think his problem is the evidence. He got a fair trial in New York in the Jean Carroll case where there was a fellow who was on the jury who list listened to a right-wing podcast, and he joined the rest of the jurors in returning a verdict of $5 million for Jean Carroll within two or three hours of the jury being sent away — into the deliberations room."
"I just don't think there's any — there are going to be people there who are going to be — you know, they'll have different political views," Conway added. "Obviously, the District of Columbia is a good venue for the prosecution, but these are going to be very smart, very intelligent and very fair-minded people."
Conway has speculated extensively about the January 6 case, also suggesting that former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows may be cooperating against his former boss.
