Republican strategist Scott Jennings told CNN on Wednesday that he believes the GOP base actually wants the 2024 election to be focused on the alleged crimes committed by former President Donald Trump.
Jennings' remarks came after CNN played a clip of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warning that the election will be all about Trump's legal troubles if the GOP again makes him the nominee.
However, Jennings believes that DeSantis misunderstands GOP base voters who think getting Trump elected even after he's a convicted of multiple felony charges would be the ultimate way to trigger their political opponents.

"I actually think they do want it to revolve around [the alleged crimes]," said Jennings. "DeSantis got asked last night, he gives off this nice long list of things that Republicans have always said they wanted a Republican president to do. But I'm sort of coming around to the thinking that we don't really want the election to be about that. We want it to be about vindication for all of the things that he was just saying, well, this is electoral poison. But, you know, for Trump's voters, getting vindication for it would be sweeter than any policy victory, I think."
Trump currently faces 91 criminal indictments on charges ranging from fraud related to hush-money payments to an adult film star, willfully retaining top-secret government documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort, and conspiring to defraud the United States by trying to illegally remain in power after losing the 2020 presidential election.
