President Donald Trump's plan to pay a $5,000 dividend to every adult in America is drawing online outrage against the scheme.
Trump told his audience at the GOP convention on Wednesday, which was sparser than he promised, that if Republicans win the House and Senate in the November midterms, every adult American will get $5,000, but they have to spend it in the United States. Online critics warned everyone against believing it and called it out as illegal.
"The president of the United States just tried to bribe the entire country to vote for Republicans with a '$5,000 dividend' if they win Congress," flagged disinformation researcher and Kash Patel-foe Jim Stewartson. "I don't even know what to say."
"You have to be a special kind of stupid to believe that Trump will give every American a $5,000 dividend if Republicans win the midterms," progressive political commentator Mike Nellis blasted.
"There are something like 269 million American adults," pointed out NBC News chief White House correspondent Garrett Haake. "Sending all of them a check for $5000, as the President just proposed, would cost the US government $1.35 trillion dollars...I've asked the White House where they think that money would come from."
"If you believe this, you're a f- idiot," agreed activist and Karoline Leavitt-foe Jamie Bonkiewicz.
"My daddy used to call this 'vote buying,'" posted Kentucky lawyer Alan Simpson.
"Yes, let's just bribe the Electorate with no pretense of dignity," reacted sports broadcaster Brian Webber.
"Reminder: Trump previously promised to give Americans a $2,000 rebate check for the tariffs, but then walked it back," noted political strategist Kelsie Taggart, adding Trump's quote "I can do that...I haven't made the commitment yet."
Others noted similar promised payments from Trump. The account for the political news network MeidasTouch joked that Americans will get their dividends "right after you get your DOGE dividend and your tariff rebate checks and your gold from Fort Knox."
"Like the DOGE cheques? or the Tariff cheques?" wondered Canadian political podcaster Laura Babcock. "Will Americans ever wise up to this conman?"
