Consumer sentiment numbers released on Friday show that consumer sentiment plunged over the last month, as prices on consumer staples such as eggs and coffee rose significantly.
Or as CNN put it in its report on the latest University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey, "America’s economic mood is now souring — and Trump is getting the heat for it."
The survey in particular shows Americans are worried about the impact that President Donald Trump's tariffs will have on the economy moving forward, as he has already slapped 25 percent taxes on imported steel and aluminum.
Joanne Hsu, the Michigan survey’s director, even specifically said that the drop in confidence was “in large part due to fears that tariff-induced price increases are imminent.”

CNN also cites comments made this week by Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic, who noted that "the economy faces heightened uncertainty" due to Trump's trade wars and added that "a trade policy uncertainty index by a group of Federal Reserve economists has surged past its historic peak.”
Regardless, Trump has sought to shift the blame to former President Joe Biden despite the fact that Trump vowed to bring down the cost of groceries on the very first day of his presidency.
