Former Trump administration press official Sarah Matthews had a blunt message on MSNBC's "The Weeknight" for how Democrats should fight back against President Donald Trump's ongoing threats to meddle in elections.
This comes as Trump moves to send election monitors into California and New Jersey, where crucial elections are taking place next week. Former Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele, also on the panel, suggested Democrats call the bluff and demand election monitors in a bunch of Republican-favoring areas.
"When you put that kind of letter out there, as we know from the Republican side, at least we have a list of people we want to be the monitors, because that's just that's the thing," said Steele. "The government, I mean, those monitors have been handpicked by Republicans in the state to go in and with the federal officials who are going to be going. So there's a symbiosis there. They know they're being fed the right information. So the reality of it is, yeah, I would do it. Why not?"
Matthews chimed in.
"I think to put this in larger context, if I were the Democratic Party, I'd be talking about how Trump is raging on his Truth Social all about the 2020 election still," said Matthews. "I would be pointing out, it is 2025. You are the current sitting president. All of your legal challenges failed over and over and over again. You've never proven that there was any significant fraud in the 2020 election. Grow up. It is time to govern. Reopen the government. Do your job. There are Americans out there who are struggling right now who are waiting in food lines because they can't pay their bills and put food on the table for their families."
"And so I would put — reframe it all in that context right now that he is not doing his job, he is a narcissist who is living in the past, who can't get over the fact that Joe Biden beat him fair and square," she continued.
