CNBC is reporting that President Donald Trump will sign an executive order on Monday that instructs the United States Department of Justice to pause prosecutions of Americans accused of bribing foreign government officials with the purpose of obtaining business in their countries.

According to CNBC, the order's stated goal is "to avoid putting U.S. businesses at an economic disadvantage to foreign competitors," although it's generally unclear how a prohibition on foreign bribery has hurt American firms' competitiveness.

As CNBC writes, Trump will instruct Attorney General Pam Bondi to "review current and past actions related to the law, while preparing new guidelines for enforcement."

One White House official tells CNBC that "a pause in enforcement" will help "to better understand how to streamline the FCPA (Foreign Corrupt Practices Act) to make sure it’s in line with economic interests and national security."

The law against bribing foreign governments has been on the books since 1977 and was subsequently amended in 1998.
