President Donald Trump faced backlash after it appeared he had forgotten that he had appointed Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

While appearing in the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump was asked if he intended to fire Powell.

"He should have cut interest rates a long time ago," Trump complained. "I think he does a terrible job. He's costing us a lot of money."

"He's a terrible — he's a terrible Fed chair," the president added, "I was surprised he was appointed. I was surprised, frankly, that Biden put him in and extended him. But they did."

Commenters on social media quickly recalled that it was Trump who picked Powell for Fed chair in 2017.

"Don't tell him that he appointed Powell…or maybe it was done with an autopen?" Tradingfor50somethings wrote on X.

"YOU APPOINTED JEROME POWELL YOU F— MORON!" a commenter named Jay noted. "That dementia is no joke!"

"It was Trump himself who appointed Powell as Fed Chair," Mark Chadwick said. "Buffoon in Chief. Don't buy the BS America."

"WHEN IS THE NEWS MEDIA GOING TO REPORT ON TRUMPS' DEMENTIA?" WTFGOP asked.

"Trump's so senile he's out here trashing Jerome Powell and doesn't even remember he's the one who appointed him in the first place," Mike Nellis observed.
