'Big fat lie': Trump claims attorneys turned up emails that dismantle witness' testimony

Donald Trump declared Wednesday that the government had been caught in a "big fat lie" during cross-examination of a prosecution witness in the former president's fraud trial.

Defense attorney Clifford Robert questioned real estate appraiser Doug Larson, who had said Tuesday that he had not been involved in appraising several properties despite the Trump Organization saying in its business documents that they had been valued by him.

In the cross-examination, Trump attorney Clifford Robert asked Larson if he remembered having phone calls about the valuations with Trump Organization controller Jeffrey McConney, ABC News reported.

He had said on Tuesday that the conversations had not taken place. Robert then cited two emails that he said prove that Larson was asked to back up Trump Organization's valuations.

State attorney Mark Ladov responded by reading a three-year-old transcript from an interview with Larson, in which Larson was shown the emails "and offered a response that was consistent with yesterday's testimony," according to ABC News.

"This is beyond absurd," Trump attorney Chris Kise said in an objection to Ladov's approach.

During a courtroom break, Trump said that the emails had caught the government "in a big, fat lie."
