He's fighting for votes and also his wits.

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu slammed Donald Trump during an appearance on CNN with Abby Phillip, calling out the GOP frontrunner in the 2024 race for the White House as someone so desperate to win the vote that he's borderline certifiable.

"Well, look, look, obviously, I have no problem with the National Anthem or who sings it," the governor said. "But, let's cut to the chase: Donald Trump's a few fries short of a happy meal."

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?

"We all know that. So, it shouldn't surprise anybody when he says or does something stupid."

The former president was in Houston on Thursday to deliver a speech at a rally where a rendition of "Justice for All" was performed by those incarcerated for their part in the January 6 riot that led the the storming of the Capitol.

"Thank you very much, and you know what that was," Trump said of the song. "I call them the 'J6 hostages,' not prisoners."

Sununu explained that the effort was a theatrical stunt to whip up his base.

"He's going to do anything he can to talk about the past, relitigate the past, fire up his ultra base of 30%-32% that probably isn't going to move from him and really remind him why he's going to stick with them and he's going to stick with him."

He continued: "If we look at the polls remember a third of his voters said they would consider someone else. He knows he could be in trouble if this gets down to a one-on-one race. So his only path is to rile up his base with stunts like that."

The governor earlier had called out Trump for being too petrified to debate the other contenders vying for the top job.

"I got to tell you, Trump is scared," Sununu told Phillip. "He's scared to death that someone is going to call him on his record for not getting stuff done.

"He's scared to death that these Republicans know his record better than even he does."
