'Geniuses!' Ex-Trump aide says campaign messed up with handling of latest flub

A co-host of "The View" ridiculed the Donald Trump campaign Thursday for embracing its own attacks on America as a "garbage can" of the world.

Trump on Wednesday latched onto a Joe Biden flub on which the president appeared to refer to MAGA fans as "garbage" — a reminder, Trump said, of Hillary Clinton's referring to them as "deplorables" in 2016.

Biden had been reacting to Trump's earlier comment that immigration had made America the world's garbage can, coupled with a comedian's comment at Trump's New York City that Puerto Rico was a "floating island of garbage."

And by trying to turn the comment onto Democrats, Trump is ultimately resurfacing his own supporter's attack, the View host said.

"Let's just start with the fact that he brought up America being a garbage can," said Whoopi Goldberg. "I assume that meant those of us who live in America. We're garbage, and I guess everybody's freaked out now because we're all in the can together. Some people thought they were out of the can."

Sunny Hostin agreed, noting, "He owns that language. He owns that rhetoric because he is the one that introduced it."

Trump told "Fox & Friends" that Vice President Kamala Harris "real garbage."

However, it was the former Trump White House communications director who called the Trump campaign stunt "political malpractice."

"I've got to say. I got an absolute laugh out of this," said Alyssa Farah Griffin.

"I thought it was hysterical because it is absolute political malpractice — as a political strategist," she told her co-hosts. "Trump hosts this rally where his campaign platforms this guy who calls Puerto Rico garbage. Of course, celebrities come out. J. Lo, everyone is coming to denounce it. Republicans are denouncing it because they know they ticked off an important voting bloc, and so this is a huge news cycle.

"Trump goes on Sean Hannity to walk it back, and Joe Biden offers him a tiny lifeline to leave this news cycle behind him by slipping up and saying his supporters are garbage. He did walk it back," she continued.

"And no! The geniuses of the Trump campaign," Griffin said sarcastically, "is, like, let's remind everybody about your worst news cycle by putting you in a garbage can and reminding everybody what you said about America and Puerto Ricans. This is the dumbest campaign thing I've ever seen."
