One Republican lawmaker told CNN that President Donald Trump is wrong about "issue number one."
Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) appeared on the news network in a video released over the weekend. The host asked Fitzpatrick if it would be a mistake for Republicans not to seize on the issue of "affordability" and attempt to fix it.
He confirmed that, yes, the GOP should be doing that. He also said his party isn't currently doing enough on that particular topic, offering a rare rebuke in a Republican conference that has been largely unified behind the president's various demands.
When asked about Trump's repeated claim that affordability is a scam or even a "con job" by the Democrats, Fitzpatrick said, "I don't believe that to be true."
"It's real," he said. "I hear it every day back home. It's real."
The GOP lawmaker then added, "I can just tell you from my standpoint, affordability is the most important issue, issue number one."
