A small detail which Donald Trump is refusing to take notice of is the reason he has lost control of the war with Iran, a biographer has claimed.
Michael Wolff believes the deeply unpopular war is spiralling out of control because Trump has not taken into account a clear problem with his planning. The biographer behind Fire and Fury believes the president is simply unwilling to take on board vital information at a time when the state of play can change rapidly.
Speaking to The Daily Beast, Wolff suggested the lack of briefing notes Trump is reading in relation to the Iran war is a source of confusion for the administration and is muddying the waters of the conflict.
He said, "I think of Donald Trump as just a guy who just didn’t do the homework. Imagine in a normal world, you’re going to war, one of the things that you get if you’re the president of the United States—the commander-in-chief—is briefing books, constantly."
Wolff claimed the briefing notes, which are prepared for a president in times of political crisis, had simply been ignored by the president. The biographer also claimed Trump is "flying by the seat of his pants" when it comes to diplomacy abroad.
"He’s a vacancy in the middle of his own world, and yet a vacancy that is fully in charge," Wolff added. "The situation could not be more dire."
Trump’s former national security adviser, John Bolton, has previously gone on record to suggest the president hardly ever reads briefing notes prepped for him and that, when he does, he cannot make sense of them.
Bolton said Trump had also not "thought through the implications or laid the groundwork" for a longer conflict with Iran.
It comes as Trump is apparently falling for the influence of Lindsey Graham, who has pushed the president hard to join Israel with strikes on Iran. This move to strike Iran runs the risk of capsizing Trump's hopes of a presidential legacy, and the move could be seen as a reluctant one from the president.
Heather Digby Parton, wrote in Salon, "Trump knows that a failed war would be the ultimate black mark on his legacy, and until now he was reluctant to go all out."
