Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) characterized the Justice Department scandal over the prosecutor of New York City Mayor Eric Adams as nothing more than a "drug deal" and championed conservative prosecutors unwilling to take part in it.

A former assistant U.S. attorney from the Southern District of New York publicly resigned on Thursday, calling the Department of Justice's primary justification for dismissing the case against Adams a quid pro quo over immigration raids. That began a domino effect, with staff in the DOJ's public integrity section resigning Thursday night and another lawyer at SDNY quitting on Friday.

When speaking on the matter with MSNBC, Swalwell heralded these resignations and blasted the new administration's culture of corruption.

"When you see prosecutors in New York refuse to do a drug deal for Donald Trump, that's what honor looks like," said Swalwell. "Every prosecutor in America should read the memo that the lead prosecutor, I believe her name is Danielle Sassoon, put forward. It's so inspiring."

He recalled that when he worked as a prosecutor, they were told to "look at facts the law, and not to give a rip about anyone's political standing."

He mentioned an appearance on "The Fox & Friends" Friday morning with Mayor Adams and Trump's so-called "border czar," Tom Homan, during which the two men joked about the agreement.

"It was so disgusting," Swalwell continued. "It's what you would see on Russian television. Just open naked corruption. And, so, what we have to do in Congress, you know, is the branch that funds the government and that funds the Department of Justice is to put in place, you know, guardrails and protections against this and that funding is coming up, by the way, in just a couple of weeks."
