A Democratic strategist said that top lawmakers anticipate Vice President Kamala Harris will wipe the floor with Donald Trump if the two meet in the presidential debate.
Speaking to MSNBC's Chris Jansing on Thursday, Michael Hardaway, a former aide to Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), said that he's had calls from officials, donors and business leaders who are excited about Harris as the new nominee.
"You're still very plugged into people at high levels of the Democratic Party," said Jansing. "Do they think Donald Trump will debate?"

"They do," he replied, "because he's foolish enough to think he can win, and she'll crush him."
Senior political reporter Mark Murray said the Trump campaign is in chaos as it retools attitudes and searches for framing regarding Harris that will stick.
Trump has been trying out a few different nicknames, repurposing ones he's used before like "Lyin' Ted," "Crooked Hillary" and "Crooked Joe," "Crazy Hillary," and "Birdbrain Nikki Haley." "Laughing Kamla" was one, but it was shredded by commentators as both sexist and joyless.
Thus far, he appears to have settled on "lyin,'" which he's tried to use on three different political foes. Jansing pointed out that he also fails to pronounce her name correctly.
She showed a clip of a video of a recent rally in North Carolina where he repeated one of the attacks on Harris.
"The campaign says, 'I'm the prosecutor, and he is the convicted felon.' I'm the prosecutor, and he's the convicted felon," Trump repeated.
Harris' campaign closed the short clip with, "My name is Kamala Harris, and I approve this message."
Republican campaign strategist Stuart Stevens laughed that the staffer who came up with the idea "deserves the night off."
