Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the Trump administration had been “too successful” in its first year. After Republicans’ historic midterm losses Tuesday night, Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) asked if she’d make that claim under oath.
“Want to say that under oath?” Hassan wrote on X, tagging Corey Lewandowski, who served as Noem’s chief adviser at the Department of Homeland Security.
Noem was backing Fox Business host and former Trump economic adviser Larry Kudlow, who had predicted before the election that Republicans would hold the Senate.
“Larry Kudlow is correct. We were too successful the first year of the Trump administration,” Noem wrote as Republicans suffered bruising losses in Tuesday's election.
Hassan had already pressed DHS to preserve Noem’s and Lewandowski’s records amid allegations of misconduct, PunchUp reported Wednesday. Trump removed Noem in March as lawmakers scrutinized a $220 million taxpayer-funded ad campaign that featured her prominently.
Noem told lawmakers Trump had supported the campaign. But the president said he knew nothing about it.
Hassan was just one Democrat who used the midterm results to put Trump officials on notice, according to PunchUp. Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-IL) told Noem and others involved in designing the administration’s immigration crackdown to “Clear your schedule.”
Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA), who is in line to chair the House Oversight Committee, wrote, “Lawyer up.”
