Senator calls on prosecutors to take down Capitol rioters with anti-racketeering laws

On Thursday, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) called on federal prosecutors to treat the rioters who invaded the U.S. Capitol as an organized crime enterprise, using the civil provisions of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act to root out their financial sources.

Whitehouse, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, is a former U.S. attorney who also served as the attorney general of Rhode Island.

The Capitol invasion, which resulted in five deaths, appears to have been joined in by members of several right-wing paramilitary groups, including the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. The FBI is also reportedly looking into whether foreign groups funded the effort.
