President Donald Trump claims he was “very surprised” at CEO Elon Musk's critiques of the so-called “big, beautiful bill.”

The reaction was prompted by a reporter's asking, “The criticism that I've seen, I'm sure you've seen regarding Elon Musk and your big beautiful bill, what's your reaction to that?”

“I've always liked Elon, and I was very surprised. You saw the words he had for me, and he hasn't said anything about me that's bad,” Trump said.

“I'd rather have him criticize me than the bill, because the bill is incredible.” Trump added, “It's the biggest cut in the history of our country.”

Trump said he thought the two “had a good relationship,” but now Trump is not sure how their relationship will be going forward.

The president later added, “I'm very disappointed with Elon.”

The remarks came during a Q&A session with Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Since his departure from the White House, the Tesla CEO has railed against the spending bill proposed for the House.

“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore,” Musk posted on X, “This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
