Donald Trump's niece, Dr. Mary Trump, Ph.D., explained the one key piece of the New York fraud trial that proved what a terrible businessman and "loser" he is.
Speaking to MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace with New York Times investigative reporter Susanne Craig, Dr. Trump said that so much of her uncle's identity is being exposed by the testimony and documents.
"It is so telling, and I think people really need to understand just how this case gets to the heart of who Donald thinks he is and has been pretending to be for his entire adult life," she said. "He doesn't mind that he is going to be on trial for heading up a corrupt organization or stealing government documents or inciting an insurrection because that gives him street cred with his base."
What is different in the fraud case is that Trump is being forced to face the reality of his brand and image as a successful businessman when it has been nothing but smoke and mirrors his whole life.
"Now the fact — that myth, survived the extraordinary work that Sue Craig and Russ Buettner did in 2018 is kind of mind-boggling," Dr. Trump said. "But this is happening in a much more public way because Donald is actually there, which just goes to how extraordinarily important it is for him to try to spin this case away from the truth, which is that he is an entitled loser who did nothing but waste his father's fortune."
Wallace agreed that it's essential to see the Trump story as part of his identity, saying that she was "inching around it," but that Dr. Trump outright said it.
"This idea that this one matters and this one hurts him with his street cred, with his own people, seems to be even more vital when you look at the results of the election last night," said Wallace. "Information can seep into all sides of the information ecosystem. If it's information that's relevant and it seems that Trump's cred on the business piece is central to why his base thinks they like him and need him. Particularly if they continue to be talking about economic grievance."
She said that it further goes to the heart of how he duped them.
"I think the simplest way to put it is this: Every lie he's told, every ounce of psychic energy he's spent over the decades has been in the service of protecting him from the truth about who he is," said Dr. Trump, a psychologist who penned a book about the family's history and how it influenced the former president. "And the closer he gets to being confronted with that truth, the more dangerous he is going to get, the more out of control he is going to get. Yes, we saw some fireworks in the courtroom, but that was a mere prelude to what we can expect, especially if, hopefully, he loses in 2024."
Susanne Craig dipped into some of the financial pieces that Dr. Trump referenced and the failures of the Trump Organization over the decades. She explained that the renovation of the Old U.S. Post Office might be successful, but the financial success was lacking.
"You know, there was a note today that showed Donald Trump out of that got $126 million when the Old Post Office, the hotel was sold in 2022," said Craig. "But what you don't see behind that is that every year it lost money. He lost $74 million just in operating it. He had to put in millions of dollars for the investment and put in additional capital along the way. When we've had a look at his taxes, which we've got in 2020, we saw, for the most part, these properties don't — his businesses don't make money, and he's having to shore them up."
She explained that so many were financial losers, but what was able to save him over the years was "The Apprentice" and the cash that he inherited from his father, Fred Trump Sr.
"It goes in to shore up these money-losing investments that he makes," she explained. "He buys, for the most part — they are white elephants. We talked about two in court today: the Old Post Office, for 100 years, the history of that and how hard it was to work with. And then secondly, Doral. And they pour tens of millions, hundreds of millions of dollars into these properties. And I don't think there is a lot of dispute. Maybe somebody has had a bad experience in one of their hotels. They're nice hotels, but they are all, for the most part, losing money."
