President Donald Trump alarmed many Americans by announcing a new "patriotic" competition that some said resembled The Hunger Games.

In a video posted by Freedom 250 on Thursday, the president promised "to give America the most spectacular birthday party the world."

"In the fall, we will host the first-ever Patriot Games, an unprecedented four-day athletic event featuring the greatest high school athletes, one young man and one young woman from each state and territory," Trump said in the video.

Commenters on X quickly compared the event to the fictional Hunger Games books.

"Ridiculous Hunger Games," one person noted. "From The Republican Party."

"May the odds be in your favor," Diane Kay joked, echoing the books.

"Well, that is certainly the way to get the press away from the release of the Epstein files story focus! Well done President Trump!" Thomas Marquis said.

Others titled the event "Hunger Games America."

"Let's hope they don't get hurt and need healthcare," one person warned.
