President Donald Trump was reportedly planning to pardon former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, a former Democrat who was convicted of trying to sell Barack Obama's Senate seat.

Axios reported on Monday that Trump was considering the pardon amid rumors that Blagojevich would be appointed to be U.S. ambassador to Serbia.

Blagojevich was convicted to 14 years in prison but only served eight after his sentence was commuted during Trump's first term in office.

The former governor also appeared on Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice" in 2010 while facing corruption charges.

"Sending Blagojevich to Belgrade would mean dispatching a former senior official convicted of corruption as the emissary to a country that has long grappled with — corruption," Politico noted.
